Canyon in January

We left Sunday night. It was 23 degrees in Wellington... 44 degrees at our campsite at 9:30 when we arrived. The stars were beautiful and abundant. The wind was cranking - all night and all day. Although we had some respite in the canyon where we didn't feel much wind at all. But we did find ice that we couldn't help but break through and find the muddy water below. A big hats off to Brian for carrying the two boys across the last pothole of water/mud/stench. And Happy Birthday Brian. It snowed on us as we approached the car after the canyon. But the drive home was uneventful. Great trip. Big Spring Northwest Fork.-Paul, Zhon, Brian, Noah, Spencer, and Tyler. We returned home on Monday night around 7:30

the past week

I was able to take these two kiddos on a walk/scooter ride last week.

We sure were loving the warm weather :)

Then on Saturday, as it turned cold, we took a trip up to the cabin... it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Seth had his tongue out catching snowflakes all the way in (1/2 mile). The snowflakes sat on his eyelashes.

Thanks again to Grandma Mower for hiking these troopers in and out of there- we love Grandma, yes-sir-eee.

November Canyon

Spence and I went down toward Lake Powell and did two canyons today. It was a lot of fun. And Spence was a trooper. He loved the rapels. He had a little scrape on his forearm wherein he left a little blood in the canyon. But that didn't slow him down. We went with Paul, Zhon, Jerel, and Kaiden. What a beautiful day it was. We did Blarney Canyon Left Fork and Lucky Charms. We stopped at Subway on the way down and Spence had a pizza for breakfast. We stopped at Rays Tavern for dinner in Green River. Good food as usual. It was a joy. We tried out our new car GPS (the Garmin Nuvi 40LM) and loved it.
Well, better hit the rack.

Perhaps the single greatest thing I learned from reading the Book of Mormon is that the voice of the Spirit comes as a feeling rather than a sound. You will learn, as I have learned, to “listen” for that voice that is felt rather than heard.

Some critics have said that these verses are in error because you hear words; you do not feel them. But if you know anything at all about spiritual communication, you know that the best word to describe what takes place is the word feeling.

Seth went with Daddy to a couple of stores. He was loving being the only kid with Dad. He sang almost the entire time in the cart. He enjoyed seeing the animals at the pet store. He was all grins the moment he woke up and he truly knew it was his birthday.

Seth has started his ABCs and is crazy talented with a ball.

He is so cute as he repeats everything people say to him. He follows the prayers that his brothers and sister give. And he is a dare devil. Last night the boys were jumping off of the toddler bed. It was decided that we shouldn't jump anymore, but Seth decided he would do another anyway. He ended up doing a front flip. Good thing for flexible necks. He was fine, but a little surprised that he actually pulled it off.

Here's the moment ~~you've all~~ I've been waiting for... finally finished.
Sorry it's almost 15 minutes long.
We had such a blast and we love the memories that come crashing back to us as we watch this together! We are itching to go again, especially to the beach. Maybe the next beach we hit will be on the East coast where the water is a bit warmer. I think we'll be looking to do a house/cabin swap on that one.
Make sure you watch enough to see Sam's dance performance at 7:50.

Special thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Gerritsen for coming with us, helping us incredibly, and enduring our quirks and fusses. Thanks for all the still pictures taken by Grandpa Gerritsen. Priceless!

Remembering

Coincidences... Steve Jobs had a large impact on our culture. With his passing yesterday, I am reminiscent of the history of Apple and the way its products have shaped what I do and the way I do it (computers, software, ipods, etc). He died at age 56 on Oct 5, 2011.I have had on my ToDo list to post a video I made back in 2003 of two people who also had an impact on my life. They were Dawn Sebesta and Jim Messinger. Among other volunteer activities such as serving on the board of Ballet West, being a docent at the Hogle Zoo, and a chairwoman of Hawkwatch International, Dawn was deeply involved with RINS (Raptor Inventory Nesting Survey) of which I volunteered for a few years. Dawn and Jim were killed in a small plane accident in Utah on Oct 4, 2003. Dawn was also 56. Here is the video:

We have really enjoyed the time together, and are looking forward to some quality beach time and Moab time in September... we hope the kids don't get on their teacher's bad side for skipping out on a few days. Fall happens to be their dad's favorite time of year to travel... besides Spring, Winter, and Summer. At any rate, here they are...

No post can fully describe how wonderful Sam is... But here are some small snippits from his life.

Samuel Luke was itty bitty when he came on August 16, 2005 at 3 lb 11 ounces and full term

Sam's heart defects mandated major surgery at 6 months old

These images are just prior to the surgery...

In 2006 and 2007 he dealt with some feeding/eating/healing issues

This was the day Sam finally took a bottle! a Miracle for certain.

At 3 years old, Sam started walking... (fully walking in October 2008)

Sam still has his struggles with communication and abilities, and that can be frustrating for him and for us at times. But we are grateful for the blessing he is to us and all those who know him!

We have been away for so many weekends now that we thought it was time to spend this extended holiday weekend around home. So we went to the gardens at Thanksgiving Point. It was a nice time to be there. I think there were only about a dozen people in the entire gardens (other than our 7) at any one time. It was a great time to be there. I've been watching the peregrine cam for Salt Lake. They are getting ready to fly (within the next week possibly). Lots of fun for us. It would be really fun to go down with scope and binoculars and watch them learning to fly next weekend. There are 4 eyases (baby falcons). They were cute and stumbling around in all their white downy feathers last week. Now the eldest is almost all molted. The youngest is still mostly downy feathers with a few adult feathers.
Peregrines have been clocked at 200mph. Their diet is mainly composed of other birds. It is quite amazing to watch them kill their prey, usually mid-air.

Scott has the funniest way of saying things. He is definitely our dramatic little boy. In fact, our red-heads are level-headed stable ones... while our blondes are the dramatic, moody, whiny ones.

But we love them all the same...

This morning Scott was at the table eating alone (I had already eaten, Sam was waiting for mom to get out of the shower, and the rest were sleeping in due to the Lehi Rodeo getting us to bed at eleven in the pm.

When Scott saw the image on the computer, he said I am small. (I think he meant short at the table)
He also said, I have volcano hair.

We went and saw the new Pirates movie tonight. Very entertaining indeed. Loved it.
Oh last night... the sky was amazing! And the effect it had on the mountains... especially Lone and Timp, equally breath-taking.

Oh how I would love a view from my house, of the sky and the mountains, unimpeded by urbanisms.

At any rate, after the movie tonight, during the credits, people were lighting up all around me. It occurred to me that many people have a burning addiction to their cell phones.

What an incredible journey. 12 hours in a car, 3 days, 2 nights, 52 incredible youth, 20 adults, 25 miles of walking, and a mighty spirit of change!

We started out at 5:45 am on Thursday at the ward parking lot. A little chilly, but promising driving weather. Left at Mormon standard time, 1/2 hour later than planned. There was some running around for supplies that morning... but less running than was done the previous night when we realized not everything was going to fit in one trailer.
By the way, before I forget:
Ty and Chelsea came down and watched the kids... they did such a great job! Thank you, thank you and thank you! Did I mention thanks so much. And thanks to mom Mower for facilitating their coming down!

The kids were assigned their families... they really couldn't go wrong... all these kids are so awesome and I would have been honored to have my kids be with any of these parents.
Here are the families... minus a couple of people here and there...

The first stop was Little America... quick potty stop and then onto Rawlins for gas.

We watched The Work and the Glory movies. I am certain next time all the vehicles will be playing the new 17 Miracles movie.

We arrived at Martin's Cove, and as expected, there were as many tour buses and Suburbans as we had participants.

We had our lunches, picked up our carts, headed over to the chapel for an opening song, prayer, words from the Bishop, rules from a missionary, and a video. Not everyone made it through the video...

Then on to the trail... it seems that we arrived just when a stake from Springville Utah arrived. That slowed our pace a bit in the first 6.6 miles to our camp.

The wind was blowing against us. Much dirt was inhaled, ingested, deposited in ears, eyes, and hair.

And many hats were carried away in the wind. Zane was set with his get-up.

Notwithstanding the wind and sand, and the impending snow falling on the mountains to the south of us... it was beautiful

We did come across a little venomous critter on the trail... but he left when he realized he was outnumbered.

We arrived at camp in time to set up our tents and catch some horizontal sun rays.

We were then introduced to our dinner... some bisquick,

a mixing bowl, some water, and some cast iron pans

They finally pulled out the honey butter and jam and some apples. This made the products of our labors very nice indeed.

I love skies... and this first night was not disappointing at all

We next had a visitor named Ephraim Hanks (one of the missionaries) who told about his life story... one word Obedient

The missionary couples were all so great... helpful, cheerful, gracious, and patient. A big THANKS to them.

We received letters from a loved one and hit the rack fairly early.

Some went really cushy... but hey, why not?

The next morning revealed that one of our 2 stoves was not going to be working this trip, so the great cooking staff made do.

A great breakfast and a peaceful morning (weather-wise) took us into a warm and sunny day.

We made group flags...

and our group had found an antelope antler to top it off.

We walked back a few miles (5 or so) to Martin's Cove and had lunch and waited for our turn to visit the Cove.

There is a neat display of statues representing the young men who helped in the rescue by carrying Saints across the freezing cold Sweetwater River.

Lunch was nice... and the pavilion was a sweet escape from the sun.

On our way up to Martin's Cove is Dan Jones' Cove.

The trees provided a nice shady spot for a short message and a very inspired blessing from the Bishop

The Spirit in the Cove was overpowering and words cannot describe the experience there.

Next, we would normally have crossed the Sweetwater, but due to extreme depths (chest deep), that was a no-go for this time.

So we waited it out and moved on to the women's pull

This was also a very emotionally touching experience.

These ladies are so tough!

We then hiked back to camp - totaling about 14 miles that day... and enjoyed some incredible food compliments of Jay S. We then went over and had a good old fashioned square dance... which is all on video so no still images of that... and then we had a testimony meeting. What a perfect day it was. So much work, bonding, and spiritually full.

The next morning some of us woke up for the sunrise around 5:30 and it was a beauty.

We packed up, had a breakfast, and then put our shoulders to the wheel for one last haul back to the visitor's center 6.6 miles back. It didn't seem so bad this time.

Funny, yesterday Spence was asking about body boarding... so we turned to the ol' youtube to familiarize him with the ways of the waves. Then this morning we look out the window during breakfast and the waves have come to Utah... only they are in the sky. It was unique because these filled the entire sky. It was more spectacular in person... but enjoy.

We had a nice ward conference today. Then the weather was beautiful. Then some really spectacular clouds started rolling in from the West. Next thing you know, it is hailing and the streets are flowing with water. Then the kids came out from all over and played in the water. Love the Spring showers!

Arches with Amber

I have been doing canyons for years now, and I finally got Amber with me on one. And what a day it was! I think everyone was challenged... and overcame the challenges! We had incredibly dynamic weather, absolutely beautiful scenery, fantastically fun people, and pictures to prove it. We fit 3 days worth of enjoyment into 16.5 hours.

Heirloom Tomatoes For Sale - locals only

Due to the late cold this season, we are hoping the weather is good enough to plant right around the first week of June. We have 7 varieties - listed below. They are heirloom tomatoes and we are selling them for $3 a plant. We are expecting them to be between 12 and 24 inches tall when we deliver them to you. Please contact me for orders (you can also leave a comment below and I will contact you) or you can call. Spencer will be walking the neighborhood with a sign up sheet as well. And sorry, we won't be mailing these out. This is a local sale only.

These are heirloom tomatoes. $3 per tomato plant. We have about 30 plants of each variety.

Pink Brandywine

The 'Brandywine Pink' Heirloom Tomato Plant dates back to the mid-1880s from strong Amish stock. This heirloom tomato has quite a following when it comes to gardeners and tomato connoisseurs. Brandywine tomatoes have won numerous taste tests and many tomato enthusiasts wait anxiously until their first Brandywine Pink of the season is ripe for the picking. These tomatoes average about 12 ounces, but have often grown up to 2 pounds. The fruits are reddish-pink, the flesh is creamy and the taste is superb. Brandywine Pink has large pinkish-red fruits borne on vigorous vines. Fruits are flattened and irregular, perfect for sandwich slices. Each pot contains 1 tomato plant.

Pineapple

The 'Pineapple' Heirloom Tomato Plant ripens its fruit to a bright yellow, often with red stripes. It is a very large beefsteak-style tomato, which frequently weighs up to two pounds. The Pineapple Heirloom Tomato has a mild flavor and meaty flesh with relatively few seeds. The unusual color and size will be a conversation starter. Plants tend to be tall. Each pot contains 1 tomato plant.

Old German

The 'Old German' Heirloom Tomato Plant has large, very appealing and tasty tomatoes. Fruit color is yellow with a red center visible on the surface and throughout the core. It is a very attractive addition to salads. Old German Heirloom Tomato is not a heavy producer, nor does it tolerate drought, but its flavor and color are outstanding. Fruits often weigh over a pound. Old German Heirloom originates from the Mennonite community of Virginia. Each pot contains 1 tomato plant.

Jersey Devil

An old favorite, the Jersey Devil is an extremely prolific paste-like tomato with the shape of a hot pepper! The fruits grow to about 5-6" and are quite meaty, generally with few seeds. They have a variety of uses and their versatility, along with their strange shape has made them a favorite amongst obscure tomato connoisseurs. This once famous variety is now extremely rare in cultivation.

Stupice

60-65 days. This cold-tolerant tomato ripens sweet, red, slightly oval, 2 inch fruit that make an excellent choice for first-of-the-summer salads, lunch boxes, and juicing. Stupice consistently gets high marks for taste throughout the summer. Pumps out fruit over the entire season. Bred in the former Czechoslovakia. Indeterminate potato leaf variety.

Red Zebra

Plant produces good yields of large 2 lb pinkish-red Oxheart type tomatoes. Very meaty. Excellent for making paste, sauce, puree, and canning. A heirloom variety from Italy.

It's a little more of a challenge to get the kids in bed with the sun going down so late. But oh isn't it great to have so much daylight? Here is Seth running around in the yard at about 8:30 tonight.

Seth is the worst. He gets all wound up at night. And Sam is there to help him out... the problem is that Seth doesn't settle down and crash like Sam does.

Wow is he learning a lot. He is saying so many words. He can completely undress himself in seconds... and he doesn't like to wear clothes.
Camille lost another tooth today... she is a couple of teeth ahead of Spencer and he doesn't think that's very fair.

Oh, did I mention Camille is an animal on the monkey bars. For quite some time, she has spent her entire recess time at school working them.

Earlier this evening, I was at John's house with his tomatoes. I think I have bit off more than I can chew.

Mind you, that is 7 different kinds of tomato plants, about 30 each. They need to be about 3 feet apart. When John grows these, they reach between 8 and 9 feet tall. I think I am going to need to farm these out to the neighbors in a few weeks.

Scott sure was cute today. When we asked him how old he was, he said 2. We said, "Scott, today is your birthday, so you are three now."

"Oh..." he replied. So later we asked him how old he was today... "I will be turning three." Finally this evening, he has relented and he is three.

While Mommy is finishing dinner, all the kids gather round her like noisy chicks looking for food. So it's best if Daddy distracts them until dinner is ready. Tonight, the kids went into the yard and allowed a photo shoot... Spence was holding the flash and Camille was helping Mom with the dinner, so you only get the youngest ones.

this is boring and techie... but I have been working on the family website KnaphusFamily.org and I am trying to find a slideshow embedder that I like. In the older days I would just punch in some html with some pre-loaded pictures and it would play... but times have changed and I don't even know if the internet browsers of today would like my old code. So, I figured I would grab one of these things like google things or flickr things or what-not and see how it goes. But so far... i don't really like any of them enough. Here are a couple examples of what I have found.

This first one is from my flickr account. I like it except that you have to roll over this for the thumbnails to disappear at the bottom.

This one is from picasa (Google's photo spot). I don't like how it doesn't loop. I also dislike the way it doesn't fill the window box it is in.

This one is Google's presentation software (from Google docs). This is basically a "Powerpoint" presentation set to run on a loop. I like it... I just wish I could get rid of the distracting controller at the bottom. Other than that, I like how it fills the window it is in.

I found one from visualslideshow.com and looks very promising. It was a free download. I like everything about it except their little url at the bottom right... we'll see if we can hack it out... in addition, all the images have to be a certain pixels first. But that's easy enough. So, sorry for the boring post... just enjoy the slide shows.

Scott has memorized the spelling of his name... or has he really learned to spell it? I am still not sure. He recognizes letters (he will grab the name-tags Aunt Emily made for our dinner table and will read the letters and the names of the other kids), but sometimes he will forget the 2nd "t" or the "o" in his name. At any rate, it is cute to watch him "read" his books at night. He has become a little afraid of the dark, even though he shares a room with his baby brother. So we have allowed him a flashlight in bed. That's been nice. A good comfort to him. He has also been our only young'un who prefers a specific blanket (although he can sleep without it, no problem). At any rate, his speech is really cute and hopefully we can capture some of those idioms on audio recording before his speech loses all that cuteness.

Oh, by the way... I am doing family photos at no cost this year... I believe it is important for families to have memories in the form of pictures... I feel strongly that families need quality photos as part of their family history and memories. I know that many people in this tight economy can't afford them... so I feel it important to share my talent and love of photography with others this year. So for the year of 2011 I will be offering family photos at no cost to the families. I will need to be judicious with the time I give with this offering, but I am willing to help out where I can. So if you or someone you know is in need of a few good family pictures... let me know and I will try and help out.

Lunar Eclipse Tonight

What is the origin of the word 'OK'?

There have been numerous attempts to explain the emergence of this expression, which seems to have swept into popular use in the US during the mid-19th century. Most of them are pure speculation. It does not seem at all likely, from the linguistic and historical evidence, that it comes from the Scots expression och aye, the Greek ola kala ('it is good'), the Choctaw Indian oke or okeh ('it is so'), the French aux Cayes ('from Cayes', a port in Haiti with a reputation for good rum) or au quai ('to the quay', as supposedly used by French-speaking dockers), or the initials of a railway freight agent called Obediah Kelly who is said to have written them on documents he had checked.

A more likely explanation is that the term originated as an abbreviation of orl korrekt , a jokey misspelling of 'all correct' which was current in the US in the 1830s. The oldest written references result from its use as a slogan by the Democratic party during the American Presidential election of 1840. With the winter creeping upon us, I revel in the dawn of the day for 20 minutes in my red ice box. Climb in, pull away from the driveway while white fairies dismount my hood and windows; they are swept away in the wind. The mountains all around are still dressed in the clouds they slept in. Birds are a flurry above. A couple of gulls fly cross-wind on their morning commute. Next a desperate flock of starlings are chased by a hungry and aggressive kestrel. My heart is in the heavens, my eyes are on the road... at times. Evidence of strong winds is found in the quickly jogging clouds that skim the earth: the flag we call freedom straightened in the breeze. A lone duck, who may have missed the Southern boat, catches a glance from my eye. The sun pierces through, but only from a moment. It seems to have just reached it's summit on top of Mount Timpanogos. Into the Salt Lake Valley I settle, and the day has begun. Another day. A beautiful morning.

we have had such a lovely time in Ireland so far. Our flight wasn't really too bad, except for Amber's knees keeping her from sleeping. So she slept as I Tyler tried to navigate a car through Dublin. We found Howth without a hitch (it's only a few miles from the airport). And it was a beautiful sunny day. A little windy, but still gorgeous for Ireland in October. We had a little snack at a Tea Room and met a nice native of Howth named Jimmy. His son owned the Tea Room. The hot chocolate and biscuit really hit the spot. Then we went to the summit and had a look over the city and ocean.
We then meandered (got lost) getting through the city to Tallaght, where we were to stay. We checked into the hotel, which I need to take a picture of, and then went over to the Shannons. We had a wonderful dinner and evening chat. Skipping ahead... we took a swim the next morning, had our breakfast and then headed down to the city on the Luas (train like our Trax)
We visited some of the sites, had a nice lunch at an Indian restaurant and then saw more sites. We went back to St. Patrick's Cathedral for their service and there was a nice choir that sang. and the acoustics in there are great. I will have to add pictures when (if) I can find a converter that works (long story). Cheers for now.

While I don't have any immediate weddings lined up to shoot, I thought I would sale a camera and lens (I have too much equipment currently). At any rate, I thought I would let family and friends have first bids on these if interested. First, the D300S (which is still the latest and greatest pro-sumer camera).
Features I really like are the

-51 point 3D focus

-live view (also does HD movies with stereo sound)

-watertight, mag-alloy body (very durable and built to last)

-controls on the body (rather than in the electronic menu)

-dual memory card slots (SD and CF slots)

-auto cleaning sensor

This camera only has about 7,000 actuations (these are rated for atleast 150,000). I have had it for less than 1 year and only, so it comes with Nikons warranty. It shoots 6 frames per second and it has a quiet mode as well. This body sells at bhphoto for about $1450

Secondly, the lens. This is the workhorse lens. It is a prime lens (which means f2.8). It is a professional lens and has an incredibly fast focus. It comes with a bayonet (not pictured here). This lens sells at bhphoto for about $1350

We received much light and knowledge from the good leaders of the Church today. Some of the things that come to mind of a practical nature were: introduce yourself to someone new each day, each week introduce yourself to someone at Church. The Church needs more worthy missionaries. Get out of debt, including your mortgage. Beware of pride. Two lines of communication to God: personal and priesthood, and how they are related. Early to bed and early to rise is more than just a trite quote, it's a commandment.
It was so nice to be together as a family to hear the things that are of greatest importance to our souls.

Moab in May

6 years ago Amber and I went down to Moab with Spence and Camille for 1 month (the month of May) to do a rotation. Loved it there. We had adventures every Saturday and some on the weekday evenings.

Here is a book we just had printed of our trip this year. It was mighty pleasant! Fun sleeping in a tent with that many kids ;)

Baptism Day

We totally failed to put this on earlier, so here goes. Despite the cold and drizzly weather, May Day (May 1) was a warm and wonderful day for our family. Spencer was visibly excited all week for this day to come. He played it down pretty well at times though. That morning, I think he wanted to get his mind off the anxiety of the baptism which would take place at 12:30. He convinced daddy to take him to get a small basketball so that he could hit more of his shots on our hoop.

We were blessed to have much of our family attend, even Grandma Kimber (from Grouse Creek), Miriam (from Oregon) and Sharon Allen (from Florida). Tina gave a wonderful talk on the Holy Ghost and Sydney mesmerized us with her violin solo. It was a really special experience, and we are proud of Spencer's example to his brothers and sister. Spence was funny... as he came out of the water he loudly proclaimed, "that was cold". He really was glowing with joy that entire day.

Spence has a strong testimony and is not afraid to share it. He bore a nice testimony on Sunday, explaining that he was fasting for the first time. He recounted the story of Jesus being tempted by Satan after fasting for 40 days.

Spence, we know the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored. The Book of Mormon contains the fulness of His gospel, and God's authority to perform sacred ordinances is on the earth for us to commit ourselves to Him.

In April 2009 I went down the middle fork of the salmon river in Idaho. Amber and I did this trip in 2001 and had a wonderful time. This trip was a blitz trip in 3 days (floating 25 miles each day). The Roost

Paul and I went down to Robbers Roost this past weekend for an outstanding canyon. We did Big Spring in the High Spur area. We first did the Northwest Fork. And that was really nice. It was good to get back into the canyons. It really feels like a home away from home down there to me. We did that one in 3 hours and then moved to the West Fork. It was more technical, but no ropes... But the weather was pleasant (not above 70). And we hope the Disney crew down there shooting "127 Hours" doesn't draw a crowd to the area in our future. It is nice to have it to ourselves. Well, here is the video. Hope you enjoy.

Raptors and Ice Cream

I have a deal with my scouts (and with my kids for that matter) that involves seeing hawk, falcons, owls, eagles, or other birds of prey. If they see the bird before I do and then I can identify it as positively a bird of prey, I owe them ice cream. I owe one right now, in fact. But if you are curious, there is a great website that a guy named Brian Wheeler contributed to. He took a bunch of pictures in the 1990s of birds of prey. His book is wonderful, but if you just want an online brief of it, here it is Try the side by side comparison once you get better at it. Watch out, it's kind of addicting, but it passes the time on long road trips quite well. And the rewards are sweet!

On occasion, I get the chance to throw on a youtube video just to listen to 'old' music that I knew when I was younger. Well, this one was one of my favorites. I had this album by the Origin. I went to their concert and had it signed by the band members. Sadly, while on my mission, my sister had it in the car and it was stolen. Now all I have is memories of it. It is a collectors CD now and goes for $50. I imagine that signed CD would be worth a bit more. :( well, enjoy listening to it for me.

What if freeway lanes were like relationships. People couldn't jet out of one just because the other person was going simply too slow for them. Or they couldn't just cut in on another relationship without warning. Or drivers were something more than an anonymous piece of metal with 4 wheels inconsiderate of the safety and needs of others. What if... you had to choose just one lane and stay with it for the long haul (until your exit from the freeway of life). Maybe we would learn a little more patience, a little more responsibility for our actions, and a little more understanding. But you better not get stuck behind a Hadco truck (or other rock hauling rig) who drops rocks all over your car and busts your windshield. That's like an abusive spouse... only legal.

I like practical technology as much as any average Jo (ok maybe a little more). But it has to be practical and have real needed value for me. My ipod has been just that... internet access (where WiFi is available), mp3 player for my scriptures/conferences/and music collection while commuting, an occasional movie or snipit from the Olympics, synchronized notes, some articles for reading, adress book, synchronized calendar, some emailing, some use of the photo repository, etc. etc. And it fits in my pocket. I take it most everywhere, and it docks in the car for use while in transit. So the iPad... I am afraid that a 10 inch screen might be too obtrusive, demand too much attention (both by the user and the onlookers - a real issue at times), not fit in my pocket, and not allow me to take notes the way I need to.
For me taking notes is an important activity... while in church and other meetings, while reading and pondering the scriptures, while at scouts, while preparing for these things, and for general journal writing. Sure, some of this is done on the desktop computer while at home, but while away from that, the clipboard and/or notebook get the use. I can take them into the field. They can withstand some weather. They don't need recharging. Will I ever get an iPad? Who knows. Will it be in the next few months? Not likely. By the way, there is a great article in the March Ensign about life unplugged. Well, you dread the day you have to tell your neighbors your moving... especially our wonderful neighbors. But when you run out of room and find the right deal... you gotta do it. So here's the scoop. We hope to close on the new place by the end of April and rent our house out. The nice thing is that it's just down the road, so we will won't be far from 'home', so to speak.

For my birthday, one of the things that I wanted was for Tyler to show me how to Blog. Last night I had my first lesson and today Tyler took some pictures of the kids. so here is my first post. ( I think that Tyler will still do most of the entries)

A is for ambitious and able. She is so talented in the kitchen and everything she makes there is a masterpiece. She ambitiously teaches our children so many wonderful characteristics; hard work, sincerity, honesty, and so many other things.

M is for the greatest mother in the world. She handles 2 hours of sleep, 3 kids in diapers, an amazing schedule, and still has time and energy for a demanding husband.

B is for beautiful, in every way.

E is for energetic and empathetic. She is tough and thoughtful at the same time.

I had to post this even though it was taken 1 month ago (2/17), because Seth's so dang cute. Unfortunately he is in the thick of having RSV. Scotty is on the mend from it. But Seth is still smiling and happy when he's not coughing his lungs out. Poor little guy. As usual, please click on the picture to view it at original size. As an after thought, I am going to put some more shots on this post as well. Can't help it, sorry.

Falconry

Went out a couple of weeks ago to the desert with Jason and his bird. Very cool. Here's the slideshow.
Remind me sometime to tell you about when I got my falconry license and Lynn Blodgett was my mentor. It didn't last long and my mentor was really busy, but it was for the best... falconry really takes a lot of time and commitment. But wonderful to watch.

facebook? is that thing still around?

so both of us deactivated our facebook accounts... for me, I haven't missed it a bit. I read today that facebook is doing a location thing now for all of its mobile users. That way you know where your virtual compadres are at all times. Kinda weird. At any rate, it was a nice directory service to get back in contact with some people who we had simply lost contact with over the years, but that's about as far as it went. I can see how it could be a good place to drum up some business (which every business now seems to have its own facebook account). And that's such a nice thing for businesses, they get the publicity without any accountability. They don't have to chat, don't have to respond... it's just like a free billboard for them. In fact, that's kind of the way it was for me... a personal billboard. Pretty much anyone who's in the right place or is a friend of a friend, can see your billboard. I never really got into the ... "right now I'm eating a ham sandwich while getting my car inspected" thing... you know, the type of tweet service that informs the world of your selective status that second.

Well, I am rambling... and for now we're still blogging; albeit, minimally.
